Their story
Andreas Zieger was born on 14 March 1833 in Heiligenkreuz, on the Bergen, and baptised the same day at Eltendorf. He never knew his father: Johann Zieger had died seven weeks earlier, on 22 January 1833, so Andreas came into the world a posthumous child. Georg Groller stood as his godfather — the same man who had sponsored his eldest brother Johann nine years before — and a kinswoman, Theresia Zieger, as godmother. He was the youngest of the three documented sons of the cottager Johann Zieger and Elisabeth Peter, and he lived a long life by the measure of his time, dying on 10 April 1896. Two later marriage entries from the same parish may belong to him, and await confirmation: a "Zieger András," a journeyman shoemaker of Heiligenkreuz house No. 138, who married in 1853; and a "Zieger András, born 1833," an Evangelical cottager who married at Patafalva in 1861. House No. 138 recurs as a Zieger seat in the village, which makes the shoemaker the more plausible match. Reconstructed from the Evangelical registers of Eltendorf (Matricula-Online), 2026.
