Their story
Johann Zieger was born on 27 August 1824 in Heiligenkreuz im Lafnitztal and baptised the following day in the Evangelical church of Eltendorf; Georg Groller, a farmer of Heiligenkreuz, stood as his godfather. He was the eldest of the three sons of the cottager Johann Zieger and Elisabeth Peter. In February 1851 he married Maria Plaukovics, a union recorded in the Lutheran register of Körtvélyes/Eltendorf. That single entry — which named both his parents, their village, and their confession — was the thread that unravelled four hidden generations: it is the record from which this entire branch was reconstructed. He grew up in the tight Lutheran cottager world of the Lafnitz valley, on the Hungarian side of a border that would only become Austrian, as Burgenland, after 1921. Reconstructed from the Evangelical registers of Eltendorf (Matricula-Online), 2026.
